Mast Gate

Beitrag von BalladExchangeDB »

My Ballad and mast are both 1978 vintage. I changed from roller to single line slab reefing but would like to fit a mast gate to allow the mainsail slides to fall down to the boom without falling out. Has anyone fitted a mast gate to a Selden mast of this vintage (1978) and any ideas how to obtain a mast gate for my mast. I asked at the Selden stand at the London boat show this year and the person running the stand did not know.

I have used a piece of aluminium strip that is used to cover the edge of carpets in doorways. A piece either side to fill in the mast gate and it allows the slides to run down to the boom. I am surprised how well it works and only cost £4. The pieces are fixed to the mast with self-tapping screws.

Thanks Dick

Interesting solution to the problem. Wondered if you could post a photo when you have time.
Thanks

David,

I have a boat and mast from 1973 and a previus owner had two stainless steel plates bent in the mast shape. These are also fitted with self tapping screws. To remove the sail, you have to open them enough to allow the runners to come out, which is really easy to do. If you want to, I can email you a photo once I have the chance.
Good luck

Bram
