Moments of Clarity (extra storage space in the forecabin)

Beitrag von BalladExchangeDB »

I wanted to create some extra storage space in the forecabin in order to be able to store a portable generator. Obviously, the extra space that was created can be used for storing various objects. From the photos you'll notice that I actually created two spaces, one for bigger items (e.g. generator) and the other for shoes, etc. This involved making a mini bulkhead plus two lids/bases. The former slides in between the forecabin bulkheads and the lids/bases sit on wooden supports that were epoxied to the sides. The whole thing can be removed but can also be laminated in place for a more permanent installation.

Some people have too much spare time.

Where does the exhaust go? don't tell me you have to drag it up into the cockpit to run it, that would be substandard for you and your ship! ;-)

Beautifull work, How do you do it?

Hi Jesper. When I read your first two comments I burst out laughing. The woodwork was easy (amazingly, most of the wood came from scrap that I found on the street). And now that the forecabin berth has a nice infill, my girlfriend doesn't complain much about that damn chain pipe anymore.

Hi Nicholas. Nice work and I agree with Jesper: too much time on your hands. I found the leak btw. As you mentioned, it is on the foredeck, a small crack in the gelcoat, but with more damage underneath. Filled it up with sycoflex now and waiting for warmer weather to tackle it properly

Thanks Bram. Good to hear that you've found the source of the leak. As for your--and Jesper's--comments, OK, that's it, I'll never post anything ever again (JUST KIDDING!). As for having too much time in my hands, well, my Swedish friend Mats is actually laminating stringers on the hull of his Ballad and is constructing a third water tank in the bilges. Now THAT'S what I call having too much spare time!

Neat! What make and model is the generator? Is it quiet? Are you satisfied with it?
I'm thinking about investing in one.

The generator is a 4-stroke Honda EU 1000i (1000 watts) that runs on petrol. It's really quiet, weighs just 13kg and uses inverter technology so power delivery is smooth. Originally, I bought it to charge the batteries through my onboard battery charger every other day while at anchor--I hate using the boat's engine--but ever since I installed solar panels the generator's main use is to run the odd power tool. It may be a bit of a luxury but it's not a bad idea to have a power source totally independed of the main engine. Maintenance is minimal. In the five years I've had it, it never failed to start, except once, following a long period of inactivity. It's a good idea to start it and let it run for 10-15 minutes every couple of weeks. You can download the operating & service manual from Honda's website and take a look at it before you commit your money. Honda also has a 2000-watt model, the EU 2000i, which isn't much bigger and weighs around 20kg.
